Secret witch-hunt syndrome
Camilla Cavendish

NEVER HAVE THE powers-that-be collected more information. But never has it been so difficult to find out what they know. It took months of questioning by an MP on the Public Accounts Committee to expose the foreign prisoner debacle; Whitehall twisted and ducked. Now another committee of MPs is being fobbed off in answer to a question that could prove to be of similar importance. The question may not sound like much. It is how many people are being accused by social workers of having the psychiatric disorder Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP).
The MPs in the all-party group have an unusual link: each has constituents who were wrongly accused of having Munchausen’s. It is legitimate for them to wonder whether these individual cases might form part of a systemic pattern of overzealousness on the part of the authorities, a concern that was being expressed in Parliament as long ago as 2001. But Beverley Hughes, the Minister for Children, is not prepared to answer their question. “We don’t collect the data,” she told them at their recent meeting. She may come to think better of that statement.

MSbP, also called factitious illness, is a perverse disorder in which an adult invents or deliberately creates a child’s illness to draw attention to themselves. Even the experts agree that it is extremely rare, affecting about 50 people a year in Britain. But campaigners fear that far more people are being accused of it because of steady definitional creep. Psychologists in the mid-1990s established a set of traits of the Munchausen mother that are broad enough to cast suspicion on many whose children are genuinely ill. The signs include attentive mothering, a reluctance to leave the sick child’s side, familiarity with medical terms and, most devastating, the denial of accusations of abuse. There, but for the grace of God.

You may think that is just so Nineties, That if there really was overzealous diagnosing of MSbP, it must have ended with the high-profile release from jail of women such as Angela Cannings. Not necessarily. Two months ago Mr Justice McFarlane castigated social workers who had removed a nine-year-old girl from her parents after her mother had sought help for the girl’s modest behavioural difficulties. Social workers decided that the mother had Munchausen’s after a nurse rang them to say that she had taken the child to hospital with stomach pains and was asking to see a doctor when the nurse found nothing wrong. Within hours, and without consulting the doctor, social workers were seeking an emergency order to take her into care. Despite no doctor ever suggesting fabricated illness, they kept the girl from her parents for 14 months. This judgment is only public because Mr Justice McFarlane chose to make it so: we cannot know how many other cases there are.

Which is precisely why MPs are asking questions. Among other things, they are concerned that the 2002 Department of Health guidelines for social services may encourage professionals to spot the disorder where it doesn’t exist. Charity workers, nursery nurses, teachers and pharmacists are all told to look out for and help to identify it. The dreadful risks of a false positive are barely mentioned. What used to be treated as a rare condition, diagnosed by a paediatrician and a psychiatrist, looks dangerously like becoming a way of relabelling sick children as abused.

“A significant number of (abusive) parents,” say the guidelines, “are likely to report having experienced genuine medical problems. They may or may not have been substantiated by medical investigations.” Come again? Their children may “present a rosy picture to the outside world”, “have been seriously ill” or have a medical history that started early in life. This is a charter for Little Hitlers and busybodies.

Innocent parents are in a double-bind. If they deny the accusations, they may be seen as a danger to the child who will be taken away from them. If they “admit” that the child is not ill, she or he stands less chance of being treated. The worst of both worlds came to Donna Reid, of Los Angeles, in 1997, when social workers said she was exaggerating her son’s asthma. He was taken from her and died six weeks later in care, of an asthma attack. The foster mother complained that she hadn’t been told how bad his asthma was.

Have we learnt nothing? Three weeks ago the High Court ruled that the General Medical Council should re-examine the complaint by a mother from Braintree about two paediatricians. The doctors believed that her daughter was not genuinely ill, but was feeling low because of her mother’s excessive anxiety.During a long battle to keep her out of care, another doctor finally diagnosed chronic fatigue syndrome in the girl. We know about this case only because the parents fought all the way to the High Court.

A simple answer to a simple question would be of enormous help here. If Whitehall does not know how many cases there are, it should ask each social services department. The excuse is that it is expensive to go through individual case files. But accurate data could at one stroke show either that there is no problem — if there are fewer than 50 cases a year — or indicate where the problem really lies. It is quite possible, for example, that an analysis by region would show clusters of cases — clusters that could indicate overzealous clinicians and social workers. They are the only people who have an interest in keeping this secret.

While the information vacuum persists, there is a huge undercurrent of claims and counter-claims. Attempts are already being made to rubbish the MPs as naive. I have spoken to four of them. They are not. And they have a duty to their constituents. Those are real people, people who were hunted down as monsters for seeking help for children. We should not permit the authorities the protection of obfuscation. This is a democracy, and all we need is the answer to one simple question.

Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy AKA MSBP

This post comes to you, to view, in hopes that everyone will come to their own conclusions regarding what you are about to read. I have mixed feelings on this one, of course, my being a mother of three and struggling through some tough times in raising the children by myself, but also with much scrutiny from those around me, including some that were so vicious and vindictive that they would have been none the happier in seeing my children ripped from my arms, however, I sit and write this to you now in knowing, my children are safely in my surroundings, but other mothers in our USA are tonight without their children.

I would like for all reading this today, to think for moment, what it must be like for a mother, who does nothing more than to want to protect her child/children. Then yet is accused of over protecting them, from an abusive parent(male or female), either abusive physically, sexually, or verbally to the child, or the mother/father. Yet, the one protecting is then accused in this society? Do the courts let criminals out of prison, or pedophiles running free on our streets, then to see THEIR children and maybe to abuse again? So why is it then that a parent(usually the mother) abused by another, and only protecting the child, this person/s is held to a strict code of parental alienation, but only for doing what was best, saving oneself and the child.

For this, a lifetime of internal prison, unable to hold the one you love, the one that came out of your womanly body, how excrutiating is this?

Please teach yourself about this subject, and help those whom cannot help themselves in these situations, and help for the sake of helping, not for the sake of making a BUCK. These people truly need your help.

This article is not intended to offend anyone, it is only to inform, and if anyone takes offense then I can only assume that your opinion is of difference of which you are entitled, however, not entitled to take offense against the writer of this article. We live in a free USA, where freedom of speech prevails, let the FACTS be shown, and the dissenting opinions be voiced, however, there seems to be a problem amongst us in America, and the children are the one's that might be the losers in an adult society.

NEVER GIVE UP

Never Give Up!

Martin Luther King, Jr. declared :

Faith in the dawn arises from the fact that God is good and just. When one believes this, he knows that the contradictions of life are neither final nor ultimate. He can walk through the dark night with the radiant conviction that all things work together for good for those that love God [and are called according to his purpose]. Even the most starless midnight may herald the dawn of some great fulfillment.

The dawn will come Disappointment, sorrow, and despair are born at midnight, but morning follows. "Weeping may endure for a night," says the Psalmist, "but joy cometh in the morning." This faith adjourns the assemblies of hopelessness and brings light into the dark chambers of pessimism. [quoted in Strength to Love]

This is a quote that I found on the internet while researching, and it struck my mind as being so true, I felt I would pass this along to all to think.

VOTEVETS.ORG

About VoteVets.org PAC

Throughout the history of the United States, America’s most courageous and competent leaders have been Veterans. George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy are only a few. Just as Veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam currently fill the ranks of government, so too will the Veterans of the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans have come back to the United States ready to take their sense of duty to the political arena, and continue their public service. They’ve come back to America wanting to change our country and they are the best messengers to be successful in this political environment. VoteVets.org PAC is devoted to making sure that these Veterans are equipped with the tools they need to be successful as candidates for public office.

Founded and supported by Veterans, VoteVets.org PAC views defense policy as an American priority. The goal of the VoteVets.org PAC is to put Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans in Congress who are critical of the execution of the war in Iraq and representative of the principles of VoteVets.org PAC in the US Congress by:

Providing their campaigns with early candidate training, financing, messaging, web and field training from the top professionals in the field
Fostering policy and message unity regarding U.S. foreign and military policy
Making direct contributions and independent expenditures to benefit their campaigns
Ensuring current members of Congress are held accountable for their votes on Iraq and Veterans’ issues by taking them to task for votes and positions that harm America, and its troops and Veterans.

Providing the credibility and support of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans community. An attack on an individual is an attack on us all. We are united in supporting our fellow veterans.

Vote to Affect Change

I bet everyone can figure out this topic. VOTE!!!! Yes it is true, even though some may not think so, but to vote is to affect change. How many out there feel that our government could use some assistance in decision making these days? Anyone, raise your hand!!!

I for one, would answer yes to this. I am sure all of us are thinking which area could use some change. This could be a filled discussion, because I am sure there are many things affecting the home fronts of many.

Normally, I am an optimistic, however, the past 2 years have been interesting, with ever increasing prices, from gasoline, food, home insurances, interest rates, health issues, etc. I am actually becoming quite concerned. Being concerned, is also leading way to somewhat of a pessimistic attitude, which, we all know, is not usually a good thing, this could rub off on others.

So, how do we all stay optimistic then in this changing society. Well, we VOTE for those whose intentions are well meant, but their record in producing and affecting change for the good, is a positive one.

Think before you Vote, be prepared and know the topics that each candidate brings forward, call them, ask questions, and most of all, do not let them blow smoke, if elected, they must be held accountable.

YOU VOTED FOR THEM, THEN YOU HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE, THIS IS THE ONLY WAY WE CAN ALL AFFECT CHANGE.

HAPPY VOTING ON ELECTION DAY!!!!

Government Dollars Hard At Work?

Have you ever walked into a Government center, and encountered employed personnel squandering our tax payer dollars? It has occurred to me recently, by visiting a local Veterans Health Center(I am a veteran)that our tax dollars that we so non-generously give up, are being wasted. After visiting the center numerous times in the past years, I have undoubtedly encountered some scenes that would certainly disgust the average American.

While sitting, awaiting for an appointment, I encountered a VERY OLD veteran, one whom deserved the respect of a President. This man made me proud, by his stories from the Vietnam war, and Korean war. He was one of the proud Purple Heart Holders, this in itself described to me, that this man had seen some troubling times. However, after his explanation of his encounters, many dramatic and sad, he patiently awaited for his appointment. After 2 hours past, seeing him in his wheelchair, still patient, I could not help myself, but to ask, why are you waiting so long, his reply: I always wait this long! Well, I said, since you have captured my attention today with your wonderful adventures in life, or some not so, let me help you.

I walk up to the counter, ask politely, please, this man has been waiting for over 2 hours, must he sit in his wheelchair in the corner for this long. The reply, "listen lady, everyone has to wait their turn". I replied, "of course I realize this, however, when was his appointment?", name is checked and verified, "oh, his appointment was for 9am", he will still have to wait, by this time, it is already 11:45. I said, note the time, when do you go to lunch, "15 minutes" he replies. I said, hm, well, looks as if you need to see him in 15 minutes then, is this possible, and if not, are you taking him to lunch, for he has not eaten since this morning I am told, and a relative dropped him off. The reply "of course I am not taking him to lunch, he will just have to wait".

The man at the appointment desk asked, "by the way who are you?" I said, well, I am also a veteran awaiting my appointment, which was at 8am, however, I am more concerned with him, I am used to wasting my entire day down here awaiting my appointments,(some of which I waited all day and was not seen) but you see, he, however, should not have to wait so long in his wheelchair, at least I can get up and walk around.

The attendant at the desk then, proceeded without interruption into a friendly conversation, with the attendant next to him, and had a wonderful rest of the morning, and afternoon, horse playing, eating at his desk, telling veteran's to wait until after lunch hour was over, and then they should be seen.

Time and time again, payroll in these centers are being squandered with our tax payer dollars, it is one thing to be paying for something useful, something helping the community, but for employees of governmental centers to be squandering away the time at not only the expense of the tax payer, but additionally at the expense of time wasted by the patiently awaiting VETERANS of this country.

I am disgusted by this repeated site, so, in trying to complain, I try to find the IN-CHARGE personnel, the comments are brushed under the rug, for it is only another COMPLAINING VETERAN, they should be happy that they are receiving their FREE health benefit(I heard under someone's breath as I complained one day). In addition, you would think, that when you make a complaint in Washington, they would listen, however, I was told, that an investigation only occurs if they have enough complaints about a particular center.

Is not ONE COMPLAINT from a VETERAN worth their time and attention? I do not feel bad for myself, I feel bad for all of the VETERAN'S with an arm/leg or other limb missing, or a mind that is not working properly, and they cannot make complaint's, they are in too much pain, or do not understand how to make the complaint.

Thanks to Joann for input on this article regarding the title.
